Cookie policy – Grey Hound
A racing odds site can function with only a handful of technical tools, and Grey Hound is kept that way. The policy names the cookies and comparable technologies in use, explains why each exists, and shows how a visitor can say no or change a choice. A cookie is a small text file that a browser saves on a device; local and session storage and pixel counters work in a similar way.
The legal rule
Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (PECR) sets the rule. Putting information on a user’s device, or reading what is already there, needs clear and comprehensive information and the user’s consent, unless the storage is strictly necessary for a service the user has requested. The UK GDPR sets the quality of that consent (Article 4(11) and Article 7): it must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous, and withdrawal has to be as easy as giving it. Where cookies mean processing personal data, the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 apply in addition.
Strictly necessary cookies
Without these the site would not work reliably. They hold a session, share load among servers, protect forms from abuse and remember the cookie decision. They are set with no separate choice. A session file disappears when the browser closes, and the remembered decision is stored for at most twelve months.
Cookies that wait for consent
Functional files remember settings such as the odds format last chosen, and analytics files count page views and show which pages are read, so that content can get better. Both kinds are set only once the banner has been answered with consent. IP addresses are shortened for analysis, and profiles tracking behaviour across sites are not built.
Third-party content
Embeds such as video or maps can bring their own cookies, under the provider’s privacy terms; an objection is made to the provider. Grey Hound does not set advertising cookies for personalised ads unless the banner gives a clear choice.
Changing or withdrawing consent
The “Cookie settings” link in the footer lets consent be changed or withdrawn at any moment. Withdrawal has effect for the future and does not touch the lawfulness of earlier processing. Browsers allow cookies to be blocked and deleted as well. Deleting the necessary files brings the banner back and may disable some features for a short while.
Supervision
A complaint about the handling of personal data goes to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK supervisory authority. The privacy policy explains how personal data is processed.
