Horse racing & greyhounds

Odds are the whole language of greyhound racing. A price such as 11/4 or 6.00 is read as a statement about probability and about the margin the bookmaker keeps.

Starting price comes first, then ante-post and non-runners, with the Rule 4 deduction that follows a withdrawal. Each-way is last: a pair of bets, win and place, which makes the stake twice the unit; the market quotes place terms, which vary by race and operator.

The taxman treats racing separately. When the remote rate for other bets reaches 25% on 1 April 2027, remote bets on UK horse racing keep the 15% General Betting Duty rate, and pool betting has its own duty.
